Black History Month is Going to be Turnt!
Image Comics has been steadily piquing my interest. Their latest announcement is pure Chicken Soup for the Blerd Soul. Black History in its Own Words by Ronald Wimberly (Prince of Cats) will be available in stores...drumroll please...FEBRUARY 2017! Just in time for Black History Month.
The work caries quotes, portraits and illustrations of Black role models and leaders drawn by Wimberly. Among those represented are Angela Davis, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kanye West, Zadie Smith, Ice Cube, Dave Chappelle, James Baldwin, Spike Lee, and many others. The book aligns with Wimberly's goal of giving marginalized voices a place to speak, in order to combat the gross underrepresentation of Black luminaries.
“In January 2014, Matt Bors asked me to pick some quotes and illustrate eight of them for the Nib for Black History Month. I chose quotes ranging from the casual to the profound from luminaries both past and present. I had so much fun I did 4 extra (12 in total) and continued to do 12 more the subsequent year. This book collects those first 24 works as well as 14 new works,” said Wimberly. Black History in its Own Words, 8 x 8 inch trim size hardcover for $16.99 hits stores on Wednesday, February 8th. The final order cutoff for comics retailers is Monday, January 16th.
